Japan's defence chief Shinjiro Koizumi and US Indo-Pacific Commander Samuel Paparo met on the sidelines of the Honolulu Defense Forum earlier this week, sharing security concerns with a pledge to further enhance cooperation between their countries' forces.

The Japanese defence minister visited the command's headquarters in Hawaii.

In a speech, Koizumi cited mounting security challenges from countries attempting to unilaterally change the status quo in the East Sea and the South China Sea by employing coercive instruments such as economy, resources and cyberspace.

He highlighted efforts to advance deterrence of the Japan-US forces in southwestern regions like Okinawa.

Koizumi also placed emphasis on multilateral cooperation with countries including South Korea and India, and elaborated on the realisation of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

In the months following Sanae Takaichi's Taiwan remarks, the rift between Beijing and Tokyo has deepened over a fighter jet radar-lock incident, and China's ban on exports of dual-use equipment to Japan.

Chinese officials have contended that the ban is completely legitimate and legal, and pointed out Japan is not a party to the South China Sea issue, urging the country to reflect on its history of aggression in China's Xisha and Nansha islands.
