South Korea's special counsel on Tuesday requested the death penalty for imprisoned former president Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of masterminding an insurrection after his failed martial law enactment in late 2024.

A bus purportedly carrying 65-year-old Yoon drove into the Seoul Central District Court to hear closing arguments as his trial resumed.

A prosecutor confirmed the existence of a scheme to seize control of the judiciary and legislature allegedly directed by Yoon and Kim Yong-hyun - his former defence minister - back in October 2023 aimed at keeping Yoon in power.

Yoon is facing other trials on accusations ranging from corruption and favour trading to rebellion, which could carry the death sentence or life imprisonment.

The court is expected to rule on the case next month.
