A man fell from his first floor residential unit last night following a gas explosion. Sources say the victim changed a gas cylinder himself and then smoked just before the explosion. The aftermath of the blast -- the unit remained chaotic, scorched items seen everywhere. The mattress and pillow took a hit, while all the window frames were broken and fell. The explosion took place in a subdivided unit at a tenement building in To Kwa Wan. The flat owner came to the scene this afternoon. Ms. Wong said the tenant has lived here for six to seven years. She said Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG is not allowed in the subdivided units, where tenants can only use electric stoves. This neighbour who has lived here for nearly three decades said she heard a loud bang while the premises shook at the moment of the explosion, so she called the police immediately. The 42-year-old male victim is now in a critical condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It is understood that he bought a new LPG stove recently and changed the gas cylinder by himself last night. While the incident is still under investigation, preliminary findings indicate that he smoked near the windows before the blast. A mechanical engineer Charles Chan pointed out that it is illegal to disconnect or fix a gas appliance without the help of a registered technician. He explained LPG leakage can lead to an explosion in just a few seconds, because the gas is denser than air, making it heavier and easier to accumulate indoors.
