Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney kickstarts a five-day state visit to China tomorrow, the first in eight years for a Canadian leader. During the trip, he is expected to hold talks with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to recalibrate bilateral ties roiled by trade frictions in recent years. Beijing earlier imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports a year after Ottawa announced a 100 percent levy on electric vehicles from China. Carney's office said the visit aims to increase engagement with Canada's second largest trading partner in fields of trade, energy, agriculture and international security. Carney has described his October meeting with Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in South Korea as a "turning point" for both countries. The Foreign Ministry pointed out the healthy and stable development of Sino-Canada relations serves their common interests.
