As widespread protests against Iran's government swelled in size in two weeks despite an escalating crackdown from the authorities, the country's parliament said the regime needed to "establish security." In a parliament session, the speaker warned that the U.S. military and Israel would be "legitimate targets" if America strikes the Islamic Republic. He also blasted a "terrorist war" damaging businesses and livelihoods, and acknowledged the economic "instability" in the country, saying the purchasing power of the population needed to be "preserved." Massive rallies over the collapse of the rial currency have rocked Iran since late December and neared the two-week mark. The theocracy has cut off the nation from the internet and international telephone calls from Thursday, yet protestors were still seen filling the streets and chanting slogans to demand an end to clerical rule. The death toll in the protests rose to at least 72. More than 2,300 others were detained, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.
