Two new traffic regulations will take effect from the 25th of this month. On all public transport, such as buses, passengers must wear seat belts if they are fitted. Also, drivers may not place more than two mobile devices—mobile phones, tablets, or laptops—in front of them while driving. The Police and the Transport Department explained the new measures, stating that the diagonal screen size of any mobile device must not exceed 19 cm, and the device must not obstruct the driver’s view of the road and traffic conditions. Violations are subject to a maximum fine of HK$2,000. Starting the same day, all newly registered buses, private minibuses, the rear seats of goods vehicles, and all seats in special purpose vehicles must be fitted with seat belts. If a seat is equipped with a seat belt, passengers must wear it; offenders face a maximum fine of HK$5,000 and up to three months’ imprisonment. The authorities said that if passengers discover a faulty seat belt, they should inform the driver.
