Nestle has recalled certain batches of its powdered infant and young children formula after 21 batches were found to have been contaminated by the Bacillus cereus bacteria.

The Centre for Food Safety urged residents not to consume the product.

The powdered formula products were recalled across Europe and Hong Kong.

According to the company, the affected products were manufactured in Switzerland and Germany.

Food safety authorities stressed the bacteria could be propagated as a result of unhygienic food production or storage.

Some local doctors noted that serious cases of infection by the bacteria could lead to death, and reminded parents of infants who consumed the product to seek medical help if their children show signs of sickness.
