The Immigration Department arrested 12 suspected illegal workers and eight employers as it strengthens its anti-illegal worker operations.

Immigration officials began four consecutive days of anti-illegal worker operations starting last Saturday, and conducted searches across 42 locations.

One such site was a food manufacturing facility in Kwai Chung, where officers arrested five illegal workers of Indonesian-descent aged between 24 and 52.

Two local managers were also arrested. Initial investigations indicated the facility hired illegal workers to prepare ingredients for Southeast Asian restaurants and retail businesses.

Authorities arrested another 13 people including Filipino illegal workers and their employers.

The Immigration Department reminded the public that employing illegal workers could result in a maximum fine of 500,000 dollars and a 10-year jail sentence.
