Pope Leo XIV said on Sunday he was greatly concerned about the U.S. raid in Venezuela and hoped the good of the Venezuelan people must prevail above everything else.

History's first U.S. pope demanded an end to violence and for Venezuela's sovereignty to be guaranteed.

Speaking at his Sunday noon blessing, Leo called for "ensuring the rule of law enshrined in the constitution, respecting the human and civil rights of each and every person and working together to build a peaceful future of collaboration, stability, and harmony."

Last month, Leo had expressed concern about the growing U.S. threats of military intervention in Venezuela, calling instead for the U.S. to pursue dialogue and even exert economic pressure.
