A strong earthquake has rattled southern and central Mexico leaving at least two people dead.

The quake interrupted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's first press briefing of the new year as seismic alarms sounded.

Buildings rattling. Shop fronts too. People gather together on the streets as items fall from high-rise buildings. Some people wait in the street still in their pyjamas.

The preliminary magnitude of the quake was 6.5 and its epicentre was near the town of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero near the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco.

Various landslides around Acapulco and on other highways in the state were reported by the state's civil defence agency.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was addressing reporters when she felt the quake. "Oh, it's shaking, let's all get out calmly," she said as the seismic alarm went of. Everyone evacuated the room.

Sheinbaum resumed her briefing ten minutes after the alarm, joking that her comments as the alarm was going off would go viral.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres just over four kilometres north-northwest of Rancho Viego, Guerrero, which is in the mountains just over 90 kilometres northeast of Acapulco.
