New Year's celebrations were held across China today with crowds flocking to Beijing's Tiananmen Square to catch a glimpse of the flag raising ceremony.

This as members of the People's Liberation Army and Shenzhou astronaut crew delivered blessings to the nation.

Held at 7:30 this morning, the Tiananmen Square flag raising ceremony celebrating the start of the new year was accompanied by a solemn performance of the national anthem.

After the ceremony, doves were released at the plaza symbolising peace and welcoming 2026.

The People's Liberation Army gave their blessings to the nation, emphasising their determination to carry out their missions and wishing China a year of prosperity and greatness.

While China's 42nd Antarctic expedition crew wished all Chinese people a happy new year and a year of technological breakthroughs aboard the Xuelong icebreaker.

Deep in space, the Shenzhou 21 crew delivered new year's greetings.

Astronauts Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang have been stationed at the Tiangong space station for two months, and are currently awaiting the arrival of their Shenzhou 22 replacements.

This as China's aerospace authorities noted they will undertake several new space missions over the course of 2026, such as the arrival of the Shenzhou 23 and 24 crews at the Tiangong space station.

Other aerospace breakthroughs this year include the anticipated first flight of the Mengzhou reusable spacecraft, which is set to transport crews for lunar expeditions in the future.
