President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders enjoyed a 2026 New Year gala featuring traditional opera staged on Tuesday evening.
Xi has also exchanged greetings with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and delivered an address to ring in the new year.
He brought to light the economic momentum brought by new quality productive forces and paid tribute to those who've dedicated to a thriving China.
He said the year 2026 marks the beginning of the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan and called for efforts to turn the grand prospects into reality.
President Xi Jinping, as well as other Party and state leaders including Premier Li Qiang, top legislator Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and Han Zheng, showed up at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
The cultural event featured excerpts of classic operas and new works showcasing China's artistic heritage, with audiences from all walks of life.
In a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin today, Xi extended his sincere congratulations and best wishes on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people.
Recalling their respective meetings in Beijing and Moscow, Xi said as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, both countries have solemnly commemorated their triumph in the World Anti-Fascist War, which signals peace will prevail, justice will prevail, and the people will prevail.
The year 2025 also marks a concrete step in the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination, Xi noted, as he expressed readiness to maintain close exchanges with Putin to jointly usher in continuous new progress in bilateral ties in the new era.
The Russian leader has conveyed his New Year greetings to Xi and wished the Chinese people happiness and well-being.
At 7 p.m. tonight, in his 2026 New Year Address aired on state media, Xi looked back on the nation's achievements in economy, national defence, environmental protection and people's quality of life.
He has emphasised ethnic solidarity and amity when reviewing his visit to the snowy plateau of Xizang earlier this year.
The president congratulated the successful co-hosting of the National Games by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao and reaffirmed the principle of "one country, two systems" for long-term prosperity and stability.
