Iranian president vows severe response to US's military threat as protests rage

The Iranian president has warned of harsh response in the wake of new threats from Washington. 

Meanwhile, a series of massive strikes and protests over economic duress continued across multiple cities in Iran which is facing US sanctions.  

Six months after US military conducted bunker-buster strikes on key nuclear enrichment facilities in Iran, Donald Trump suggested Washington could carry out further military actions if Tehran attempts to resume its ballistic missile or nuclear weapons programmes. 

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has fired back, posting on social media that their response to any cruel aggression would be "harsh and regret-inducing."

A political advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei also said Iran's missile and defence capabilities "are not containable or permission-based". 

This week, the country's largest protests in three years swept through Tehran and other major cities including Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad over a record-low currency against the US dollar and declining living conditions. 

Rial has lost almost half its value against the dollar with inflation spiking to a staggering 42.5 percent this month. The head of the Iranian Central Bank resigned on Monday. 

Hundreds of students at four universities in the capital city joined shopkeepers and bazaar merchants to take to the streets. 

Scores of demonstrators marched along a street and chanted "Rest in peace Reza Shah," a reference to the founder of the former ruling Pahlavi dynasty ousted in the 1979 Islamic revolution. 

Police in riot gear were seen shooting teargas in some areas to quell the unrest. Clashes erupted near a market in downtown Tehran. 

The Iranian government said it was "listening to the voice of people" and seeking to "restore calm."

President Pezeshkian, who met with a group of business leaders, said his administration will strive to solve problems and improve situation of the society. 

The country's tax department said the tax arrangement will be revised in favour of businesses.
