At least 13 people died in a train derailment in southern Mexico. Officials said more than 250 passengers and crew members were on the train when the accident happened. The Interoceanic train linking the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz derailed as it passed a curve near the town of Nizanda. Apart from the 13 deaths, authorities said 36 people required hospital treatment. We didn't even know what happened, said passenger Rosa Ramirez. We were suddenly under the train. The train service was inaugurated in 2023. The service is part of a broader push to boost train travel in southern Mexico, and develop infrastructure along the isthmus of Tehuantepec, a narrow stretch of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The Mexican government plans to turn the isthmus into a strategic corridor for international trade, with ports and rail lines that can connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Mexico's attorney general said in a social media post that an investigation will be opened to determine the cause of the accident.
