Friday was Boxing Day, and many are taking advantage of it and the coming weekend to travel up north.

As of 4 p.m., more than 600,000 passenger trips were recorded across all control points, with over 400,000 being departures.

Hong Kong's West Kowloon station was packed with holidaymakers this morning. Many of them were families.

Long queues were formed for immigration clearance. Train tickets to Wuhan, Guiyang and Guilin were sold out.

This resident said they were heading to Heyuan to enjoy hot spring and savour some great food.

This lady who is travelling to Dongguan, opted for the high-speed train instead of driving to avoid potential traffic jams.

This year's Christmas Day and Boxing Day fell on Thursday and Friday, and many are combining them with the coming weekend for a four-day holiday.

Thursday saw 600,000 people going to the mainland, marking a 15 percent increase from last year. Commercial area Tsim Sha Tsui appeared to be quiet at noon.

But a Malaysian tourist who has spent four days in the city, said the festive atmosphere was vibrant over the Christmas.

Meanwhile, a mainland visitor said she did not manage to book a hotel room.

Lawmaker Peter Shiu said local retailers were not having great business generally, mainly because many locals have travelled across the border for the holidays.

He added that the Tai Po fire incident may have also subdued the holiday moods of many Hong Kongers.

However, he remains optimistic about business over the upcoming Chinese New Year as he believes people's spending desire may improve.
