Southbound scheme driver uses autonomous driving system

The Transport Department said it is investigating a mainland Chinese driver who activated his car's autonomous driving system when driving into Hong Kong on the first day of the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicle Scheme.

In a video, the driver initially held the steering wheel with one hand, but he later removed both hands, allowing the vehicle to travel autonomously.

The Transport Department confirmed the incident, and said that authorities are probing into the matter seriously.

They will issue a warning letter to the driver suspected of using Integrated Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems.

If the person cannot provide a satisfactory explanation for the usage, the department will suspend his qualification of booking trips under the scheme.
