The Immigration Department said more than 800,000 travellers entered and exited Hong Kong via various control points as of 4 p.m. on Christmas day. Over 560,000 Hong Kongers have left the city.

This was Shenzhen Bay Port on Christmas day afternoon. Metal fences were placed outside the departure hall to manage the flow of people. Many Hong Kong travellers were among the crowd.

While the queue for border clearance was long, it was not an issue for the holidaymakers.

"This is the festive atmosphere. If you don't have this, this is not a festival," said one man.

The Immigration Department opened extra e-channels and service counters to enhance clearance efficiency.

It estimated that about 11.52 million passengers will pass through Hong Kong's sea, land and air control points over the Christmas and New Year period.

Among the land boundary points, the department said that Lo Wu Control Point, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point and Shenzhen Bay Control Point would be the busiest.

The Immigration Department also expects the number of outbound and inbound travellers to peak on Christmas day and Sunday, with around 689,000 passengers and 695,000, respectively.
