The Christmas long weekend begins today, and many citizens are traveling out of town. The Immigration Department expects today to be a peak day for outbound travel. As of 10:00 AM, over 280,000 people have entered and exited the city, with over 80% of them departing. At the departure hall of the West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station, it was already packed with people by 8:00 AM. Long queues were formed at self-service channels and manual counters, with many people dragging their luggage while waiting to cross the border. The waiting hall inside the restricted area was packed with people, and long queues also formed to reach the platform level. The station had to implement crowd control measures. The station screens showed that many trains departed in the morning, but tickets for both long-haul and short-haul trains were already sold out. The Immigration Department earlier forecasted approximately 9.65 million people would enter and exit through various land border crossings during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The Travel Industry Council estimated that there would be approximately 1,500 tour groups traveling abroad during this long holiday, similar to last year, mainly high-speed rail tours.
