The first batch of mainland vehicles travelling under the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme made their way to the city earlier today. This as the Transport Department noted the daily quota was close to being full. Meanwhile, some Guangdong motorists driving in the city for the first time said they faced various traffic-related challenges. The southbound travel scheme allowing mainland vehicles to enter the city kicked off this morning, attracting scores of eager mainland tourists to organise self-guided road trips to Hong Kong for the first time. Zhuhai resident Mr. Liu was among the first to enter the city under this arrangement, having organised a day trip with three of his friends. Throughout his journey, he was reminded by his navigation system to slow down on numerous occasions. Liu said he's not familiar with Hong Kong's roads, and will try to be more careful while driving. Hoping to try the city's delicacies on the first leg of his Hong Kong tour, Liu encountered heavier traffic when he reached Tai Kok Tsui. By the time he reached Yau Ma Tei, parking spots became impossible to find. It wasn't until 10 minutes later when he finally found a spot on Pitt Street. But using an Octopus card proved harder than expected, with the mainland motorist saying that he's more used to electronic payment methods using QR codes. After trying some local roast goose dishes, he took off to his second stop at Tsim Sha Tsui. This as the driver faced difficulties with the bustling urban centre, which confused even his navigation system. Liu called his overall experience a positive one. According to the government's arrangements, a quota of 100 Guangdong vehicles are permitted to enter Hong Kong each day and remain for three consecutive days. Authorities expect applications to increase in time.
