Tram driver sentenced to 4 weeks in jail after accident killed 3-year-old

A tram driver has been sentenced to four weeks in jail after he was found guilty of careless driving that resulted in the death of a three-year-old girl.

The incident happened in August last year near the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool, when a tram struck two girls, their grandfather and the family helper.

The four attempted to cross the street during a red light. The three-year-old was found trapped underneath the tram and later pronounced dead.

Deputy Magistrate Chung Wing-sze said the crash could not be avoided since the tram was unable to swerve, a matter of consideration that greatly reduced the driver's sentence.
