The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have insisted that the United States will not take over the Danish semi-autonomous territory and demanded respect for Greenland's territorial integrity.

This after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the appointment of a special envoy to Greenland.

He said: "We need Greenland for national security. And if you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place. We need it for national security. We have to have it. And he (Jeff Landry) wanted to lead the charge. So we're making him, Marco (Rubio), today a special envoy to Greenland. Greenland is a big deal."

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said in a joint statement: "There are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security."
