Japan's defence chief vows to boost defence in the nation's southwest

Japanese defense minister Shinjiro Koizumi has pledged to boost defenses in the country's southwest during an inspection tour in Nagazaki.
Koizumi was present at the launching ceremony of a Self-Defense Forces' frigate today.
He said enhancing the defence regime in the southwestern regions is a topic of significance, and suggested expanding defense equipment exports by way of amending existing regulations.
Last Friday, when asked about whether he thinks it's difficult to retract Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's Taiwan remarks, Koizumi stated he doesn't think a retraction is necessary at all.
The Foreign Ministry in Beijing blasted the recent remarks by a Japanese senior official about possessing nuclear arms.
Spokesman Lin Jian called the purported suggestion a blatant provocation to the international non-proliferation treaty that would seriously undermine regional peace and stability.
He said the international community must be highly vigilant and show resolute opposition.
