At Taava Reindeer Farm, 25 kilometers from Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, visitors can see what Rudolph and his pals get up to the other 364 days of the year. Up here, close to the Arctic Circle, reindeer herding is a way of life. This farm, next to the flowing Kemijoki River, is home to about 30 reindeer. Finland has some 4,500 herders and 200,000 reindeer. The Nordic country's reindeer herding region covers about a third of the country, around 120,000 square kilometers. Reindeer are well adapted to temperature changes. In Siberia, reindeer have adjusted to -70 degrees Celsius in winter to over 30 degrees Celsius in summer. Their winter fur is dense with heat-insulating air pockets.
