Police have arrested 15 people on suspicion of conspiracy to rob with regards to the 1 billion Japanese yen robbery at a money changer in Sheung Wan last week, but the stolen cash has not yet been recovered. The incident occurred at 9 a.m. last Thursday. Two employees of a virtual currency and luxury goods company went to a money changer on Wing Lok Street intending to exchange 1 billion yen in cash. They were threatened by three knife-wielding robbers, who stole four suitcases containing the cash. The robbers fled by car and handed the four suitcases to an accomplice vehicle nearby. After investigation, police arrested 15 local people, including 11 men and 4 women, aged 20 to 69, reportedly unemployed or casual construction workers, among others. Some have triad backgrounds. Police have charged seven of them with conspiracy to rob. Police described the gang as having a certain degree of planning, coordination, and brutality, with practiced methods and clear division of labor. The case is still under investigation, and more arrests are not ruled out.
