China's top diplomat Wang Yi has offered backing for Venezuela in a phone call with its foreign minister Yvan Gil, as the South American nation comes under increasing pressure of Donald Trump's order for an oil ship blockade.

During the phone conversation, Wang contended that China, as Venezuela's strategic partner, opposes all unilateral bullying and supports all countries in defending their sovereignty and national dignity.

He defended Venezuela's right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other nations, saying China believes the international community understands and supports the country's position of safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests.

Gil stressed their government and people will deter threats from any hegemonic forces.

Debates continued on the Capitol Hill over the legality of the US military's attacks against an alleged drug boat in September.

Some Senate Democrats urged authorities to release the video of the attacks to the general public, saying Americans would feel "shocked, sickened and even ashamed"

In the latest crackdown, a vessel accused of smuggling drugs in the Eastern Pacific was attacked by US troops on Wednesday, killing four people and bringing the total number of boat strikes to 26.

President Trump has escalated his sanctions against the Maduro administration by announcing a total blockade on sanctioned oil tankers off the coast of Venezuela.

The Venezuelan leader struck a defiant tone as he rejected US takeover in a speech at the National Assembly. He described it as "a warmongering and colonialist ambition" to change the regime and impose a short-living puppet government.

The president of the parliament vowed they "will never surrender" after a declaration in repudiation of Trump's order was passed.

Out in the streets of Caracas, people expressed concerns that the blocking of oil exports would slash the country's income in the months to come.

"We hope that a change will come one way or another," an engineer said, "changes that are not traumatic but for the good of Venezuelans."
