Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado fractured a vertebra while fleeing Venezuela on a small boat to receive the award in Oslo, her spokesperson said.

Machado went to Norway in defiance of a decade-long travel ban after spending more than a year in hiding. She arrived too late for last Wednesday's official prize ceremony.

Doctors examining her in Oslo have since diagnosed a fracture in her back, sustained during rough weather on the boat trip. Her daughter collected the award on her behalf.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has again denounced Machado, and has also slammed Chilean president-elect Jose Antonio Kast, warning him not to mess with Venezuelan migrants.

Be careful, don't you dare touch a Venezuelan, Maduro said in televised remarks.

Chile has become the latest country in Latin America to veer toward the right. Kast has expressed nostalgia for the 17-year military dictatorship of the late General Augusto Pinochet.
