The Yau Ma Tei Section of the Central Kowloon Bypass will open this Sunday at 10 a.m.

Drivers will be able to travel between Yau Ma Tei and Kowloon Bay in just five minutes.

It will be toll-free until the entire bypass is fully commissioned next year.

The Central Kowloon Bypass, designed to vastly save drivers' time, will be commissioned in two phases, with the Yau Ma Tei Section making its debut Sunday morning.

Stretching 4.7 kilometres, the western portal connects the Yau Ma Tei Interchange to the Kai Tak Interchange.

A 3.9-kilometre tunnel runs beneath urban areas including Yau Ma Tei, Ho Man Tin, Ma Tau Wai, and ends in Kowloon Bay.

The transport officials expects the peak-hour journey time will be shortened from 30 minutes to five minutes.

HO KWAN-HANG, Acting Assistant Commissioner for Transport/Management and Paratransit said, "We expect that with the commissioning of the Central Kowloon Bypass Yau Ma Tei Section the alternative routes in the Central Kowloon will be relieved. But at the same time, the Central Kowloon Bypass will serve a fast alternative route in the community."

So are drivers excited about it?

This van driver says the new route will be much more convenient for him to get to the West Kowloon side.

While he is not yet familiar with the setup, he thinks he will adapt to it quickly.

The bypass offers a route that goes underneath busy urban Central Kowloon.

The tunnel section required about 2,400 controlled blasts while protecting 240 structures above, including hospitals, schools, historic structures.

The Bypass is close to seven MTR lines, with the nearest point between the tunnel and railway structure just three metres apart.

TSANG CHUNG-MAN, Acting Deputy Project Manager (Major Works) of Highways Department said "We need to do a lot of monitoring in terms of noise, dust and vibration throughout the whole construction period. Definitely we need to ensure the safety of the public properties, as well as those MTR lines nearby."

The Central Kowloon Bypass (Yau Ma Tei Section) is a large-scale project involving the construction of flyovers, a drill-and-blast tunnel and underwater tunnel. It took eight years to complete and cost over 40 billion dollars.
