After 17 years and five defeats, Christine Fong finally secures a seat in the Legislative Council -- while earning the highest number of votes in all of Hong Kong. She spoke with TVB News about her long road to victory. With 58,825 votes, Christine Fong Kwok-shan secured a seat in Hong Kong's Legislative Council. That's after five failed bids -- and finally winning in her sixth attempt with the highest number of ballots. Fong admits it's quite rare for a councillor to spend 17 years -- trying to vie for a seat in the legislature. From 2008 until now, she remained a district councillor, noting it was a rather arduous journey. At 59, Fong even put her own savings into campaign efforts. Step by step, she finally achieved her dream to be a lawmaker. But her parents who had always supported her bids have passed away -- unable to share in this joy. Choking back tears, Fong says the first thing she did after being elected was to visit her parents' graves to tell them the good news. She says perhaps she's stubborn -- giving everything to serving the community, which may have worried her parents at the time. Still single, Fong treats her three adopted dogs as part of her family. She admits she needs companionship and if romance comes along, she will just go with the flow without forcing it. The long-serving district councillor -- and now lawmaker-elect -- notes the road ahead carries great responsibility. She hopes to let the public feel she's someone within reach -- able to connect with the people in both the hearts and minds.
