With a population of over 100 million, Vietnam is the second biggest trading partner in ASEAN with Hong Kong. In our new series "Visions of Vietnam," TVB News visited the country to understand its trade, economic and cultural connections with Hong Kong. We begin with a look at the inaugural Hong Kong Pavilion at this year's Vietnam International Trade Fair, which aims at opening doors for Hong Kong brands, wishing to tap the fast-growing Southeast Asian market. Held in Ho Chi Minh City, this year's Vietnam International Trade Fair has attracted more than 800 exhibitors. For the first time, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council has partnered with the Federation of Hong Kong Industries to roll out a dedicated Hong Kong Pavilion, showcasing products from 21 Hong Kong brands and featuring 15 inaugural Hong Kong exhibitors. The line-up includes a classic Hong Kong woolen underwear brand, boasting a history of over 70 years. It sees the trade fair as a gateway to new distributors while expanding its Southeast Asian presence. ALICIA TAM, Director, Chun Au Knitting Factory: "We see our brand does have a potential if we brand it right and target to the right market." Another Hong Kong brand sells stainless-steel kitchenware. Having tapped the European and US markets for years, it is now setting sights on expanding both its markets and production lines into Southeast Asia. KRISTON SUN, Director of Operations, Kinox: "In Vietnam, there are many advantages, like the labour and also the politics is very stable here, and we can see there are more and a lot of opportunities." Also at the exhibition is this Hong Kong toy manufacturer, which has operated factories in Vietnam for more than a decade. Having secured a foothold in Vietnam, the company says production there offers clear advantages amid geopolitical tensions. JERRY CHENG, Sales and Marketing Manager, Kando Toy Company: "We benefit on the travelling, the tax benefit, so that for example, we are in a very large scale move to the US or UK, it makes us more stable, so that I think Vietnam is a very good place for Hong Kong business." The ASEAN Council under the Federation of Hong Kong Industries is planning to set up Hong Kong Pavilions in more ASEAN countries beyond Vietnam, in a bid to strengthen regional visibility for more quality Hong Kong brands. Bilateral trade between Hong Kong and Vietnam has grown by nearly 10 percent annually over the past decade, with total trade reaching 31.5 billion US dollars in recent years. Vietnam is now Hong Kong's largest export destination within ASEAN.
