The Hong Kong's Brands and Products Expo opens today.

The 24-day event, featuring over 600 stalls, is organised by the Chinese Manufacturers' Association.

A race for the special "1-dollar discount" abalone products kicked off the 59th Brands and Products Expo held at Victoria Park earlier in the morning.

This woman, the last to get a bag, said she arrived as early as 9 a.m.

Even though memories of the recent Wang Fuk Court fire still weighing heavily in the minds of many, some exhibitors believe the blaze will not play a significant role in diminishing consumers' appetite.

I don't think so.

Because Hong Kong people always use positive thinking to face everything.

We expect we can have 15 to 20 percent increase (in business).

Some exhibitors, meanwhile, offered products and services free of charge specifically for those affected by the No. 5 alarm fire.

Our company will offer victims of Tai Po free health treatments.

We hope to help them get (back) on track with their lives.

Hoping to address the city's rising elderly population, the expo organised a senior vitality zone for the first time.

Actually I don't have any expectations.

But in fact there are more people than I expected.

Because we see the aging population in Hong Kong is coming up, and we want to do some promotion first here.

The opening day of the 24-day event also attracted tourists.

I bought some honey, and I'm trying to see different products of the region -- it's really nice.

So, in France, it's all of our regions and regional products.

It's kind of a similar (event).

Making an appearance at around noon, Financial Secretary Paul Chan spent some 4,000 dollars purchasing home appliances and health products.

The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong said it has already donated 10 million dollars acquired partially through ticket sales for this year's Brands and Products Expo to victims of the Tai Po fire.

Many exhibitors said the customers' mood has not been dampened by the tragedy, adding that the people flow is similar to that of last year.
