Kyodo News reported that prep materials for a Diet session indicated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's controversial Taiwan remarks were not planned in advance. An upper house member of the main opposition party, Kiyomi Tsujimoto, posted documents prepared by the Cabinet Secretariat on X on Thursday. The disclosed materials contain remarks including: "The government will decide what kind of situation would be a survival-threatening situation after considering all the information based on the specific conditions an actual situation entails." Tsujimoto said Takaichi's remarks linking a Taiwan contingency to a potential Japanese military intervention were made "on the spot" and not written by the officials, adding the comments represented the prime minister's own personal views.
