The Financial Times reported that regulators in Beijing have been discussing ways to permit limited access to Nvidia's H200 artificial intelligence chips as they push for the semiconductor self-sufficiency campaign. The chip sales are likely to be applauded by China's tech giants such as Alibaba and ByteDance. Sources say buyers are required to submit purchase requests and explain why domestic providers could not meet their needs, although no final decision has been made on the approval procedure. According to the report, other measures including enhancing customs examination of chip imports and providing subsidies for home-grown chips could be applied by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Despite some opposition from the US Congress, the Trump administration recently greenlighted the shipment of H200 products to approved customers in China "under conditions that allow for continued strong national security." President Donald Trump proposed that 25 percent of the revenues will be paid to the federal government.
