Twelve people have been confirmed dead after a fire swept through a residential building in the Guangdong city of Shantou. The blaze broke out on Tuesday night at around 9:20 p.m. Smoke rose from the ground level to upper floors at this residential building in the Chaonan district. The fire was put out after about 40 minutes, but eight people were already found dead at the scene. Another four were taken to hospital but were confirmed dead later. According to mainland media, the fire started at the ground level's household hardware store. Those who died were reportedly the store owner and his family members. Recently, Beijing launched a nationwide inspection of fire hazards in high-rise residential and commercial buildings. The campaign is aimed at preventing accidents linked to renovation works, aging facilities and blocked evacuation routes. The directive came in the aftermath of Hong Kong's deadly Tai Po blaze.
