Last night's earthquake just off Japan's Aomori resulted in some casualties, but Hong Kong's Travel Industry Council said everyone in the 20 or so Hong Kong tour groups travelling in northeastern Japan are safe and
their itineraries not affected.

The Immigration Department stated that it has also not received any requests for assistance from Hong Kong residents.

We interviewed a Hong Kong resident who was in Aomori last night.

Michael said he and his wife were resting in their hotel room and they heard a very loud alarm, with a message in Japanese and English, saying a strong earthquake was about to occur. Right after it finished, the shaking started.

"Mostly shaking, but you really can't tell if it was swaying or shaking, just a lot of vibration going on at the time. You just have to lie down or crawl onto the floor, just to stay safe."

Michael said he had never experienced an earthquake before and he was scared. He said the vibrations went on for about a minute or two, and then the couple went downstairs to the safety of the hotel lobby.

He said one good thing was that electricity, water and internet was not interrupted.

The Hong Kong Observatory said if Hong Kong travelers saw signs of tsunami, they should evacuate quickly to higher grounds, and not to wait until they see the tsunami.
