A 71-year-old man has been charged by the Police National Security Department, in the first-ever use of the offense of prejudicing of investigation of offenses endangering national security. The case was brought before the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts this morning. It is understood that the defendant is Wong On-yin, a current affairs commentator and former deputy convener of the disbanded Civil Human Rights Front. He was escorted by a police vehicle to court this morning to attend the hearing. Last Tuesday, in connection with a national security case, he was invited to the Mong Kok Police Station to assist with an investigation, and police reminded him that the contents of the meeting were confidential. However, the following day he disclosed part of the investigation’s content on social media. The National Security Department took action last Saturday, invoking Article 88 of the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance—“prejudicing of investigation of offences endangering national security”—and arrested him in Sheung Shui. He is also involved in the offense of “seditious intention.”
