Macron tells French media he threatened China with tariffs

During French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to China last week, the two countries issued joint statements on strengthening global governance, joint response to global climate and environmental issues, among other items. 

However, Macron told French Daily Les Echos on Sunday that he had threatened Beijing with tariffs during his state visit if there was no action taken to reduce China's trade deficit with the European Union. 

The EU's goods trade deficit with China has ballooned by nearly 60% since 2019. 

Macron said he urged Beijing to boost cooperation on "unsustainable" global trade imbalances, geopolitics and the environment. 

Macron further told the daily that the European industry is in a tough position, caught between the US's protectionism and China, and "is hitting the heart of the European industrial and innovation model."
