Hawaii's most active volcano, Mount Kilauea, has resumed eruptions, sending fountains of lava high into the air and lighting up the night sky with a brilliant red flow.

The eruption is contained for now within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

But scientists from the US Geological Survey are closely monitoring the increased seismic activity and the behaviour of the lava flow.

Lava fountains reaching heights of 15 to 30 metres are erupting from both the left and right vents of the north cone.

In Hawaiian legend, the goddess Pele resides at Kilauea, and native Hawaiians show respect through offerings and rituals, recognising her as a living force.
