Netflix struck a deal to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, the Hollywood giant behind "Harry Potter" and "Superman" in a 72-billion US deal dollar deal that would bring together two of the biggest players in television and film.

The move could potentially reshape the entertainment industry. Netflix has sent shockwaves through Hollywood by announcing the multi-billion US dollar agreement to acquire Warner Bros. including its films and television studios, the century-old home of "Superman", "Casablanca" and also the more recent "Harry Potter."

"Netflix would also gain Warner's Legacy Film studio, marking a notable shift for its current presence in movie theatres today," said the Associated Press' Wyatte Grantham-Philips. "Yet there could be tremendous regulatory hurdles. Analysts stress that it will be a bumpy road and that politics could play as the companies try to get the green light from the Trump administration.

Not included in the deal are networks like CNN and Discovery channel. Beyond TV and movie production, the merger would bring two of the streaming world's biggest names Netflix and HBO Max under the same ownership.

If the two platforms remain separate subscriptions, users may encounter more bundle promotions and boost content libraries more broadly.

"If the deal goes through, some experts say that consumers could possibly feel price relief in their streaming budgets," added Grantham-Philips. "A big unknown is whether HBO Max and Netflix would become a mega streamer, of sorts. But even if the two remained separate subscriptions, sharing the same parent company could mean more bundle promotions."
