South Korean special counsel additionally indicts Yoon Suk-yeol on perjury charge

One year after Yoon Suk-yeol's ill-fated power grab, a South Korean special counsel has additionally indicted the ousted leader on a perjury charge. 

On Thursday, deputy special prosecutor Park Ji-young said the additional indictment was filed for perjury in connection with Yoon's false testimony when he appeared as witness at the trial of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo last month. 

Han has been charged with aiding and abetting Yoon's insurrection.

Earlier, a special counsel team reportedly sought a 15-year prison term for ex-first lady Kim Keon-hee on corruption charges. Her sentencing date was set on January 28th, 2026. 

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has said his administration will designate December 3rd as People's Sovereignty Day for an annual reflection, vowing to hold all perpetrators accountable. 

Lee also stressed his desire to amend ties with the North. 

He's considering a possible apology over his predecessor's suspected intention to raise military tensions on the Peninsula in the buildup of the martial law declaration.
