H-1B is a type of temporary work visa in the United States, mainly used by U.S. tech companies to attract highly educated foreign talent. The U.S. Department of State recently announced that, starting December 15, all H-1B applicants and their family members must set all their social media accounts to “public” status to facilitate review.
When processing visa applications, the authorities will refer to this information to identify applicants who do not meet U.S. entry requirements, including those who may “pose a threat” to U.S. national security. Reuters cited a State Department cable sent to overseas posts stating that any individuals involved in speech censorship could have their visa applications denied.

In September, U.S. President Trump raised H-1B visa fees from several thousand dollars to as high as one hundred thousand dollars, about HK$780,000, sparking concern in the tech industry.
