The death toll from floods and landslides across Indonesia's Sumatra Island has climbed to 811.

The Indonesian government says it will initiate thorough investigations into the alleged ecological damage that may have worsened the disaster.

Cabinet secretary Teddy Wijaya says evacuation and handling of victims remain the government's priority. According to the official, environmental degradation acted as a contributor to the flash floods.

Rescue efforts are continuing in cut-off communities in North Sumatra.

Over 280 evacuees depending on donations gathered at a church transformed into a shelter while more aid is being delivered by land, sea and air.

The National Disaster Management Agency stated it had received 40 tonnes of relief supplies that included food, drinking water and medical equipment.
