Residents of Wang Chi House, the only block spared by the tragic fire in Tai Po, are allowed to return to their homes today and tomorrow to collect personal belongings and valuables. Packing up personal belongings and leaving with suitcases, each household of Wang Chi House can send two members to their flats for 90 minutes to retrieve their belongings between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The authorities have yet to announce when the residents can move back in for good. To many of them, it is heartbreaking to walk by and see neighbouring buildings severely burnt in the estate. Standing here on Piover Cove Road, we can see Wang Chi House is still wrapped in protective netting with not as much damage as other blocks. However, a resident told me that some of the doors inside are open and destroyed. A video by a resident showed that corridors in Wang Chi House are mostly intact, with electricity and water supplies still available. This man said his door was forcibly opened, but his flat was not wet. This woman said she took out personal documents, such as birth certificate, and some clothes. "There is no place like home. It will be difficult for me to get used to a new living environment," said this resident who has lived here for decades. Meanwhile, some taxi drivers were on standby outside the housing estate to offer free rides for affected residents. Taxi driver Terence said, "I feel very sad about this kind of thing happens. I am also a resident here in Tai Po. I would like to give a hand to those people who are facing the tragedy. No matter what, we will spare the whole day to give them a help. Wherever they are, (as long as) it is in Hong Kong, within the boundary, of course I can take you there."
