The Legislative Council general election will proceed as scheduled on Sunday. Chief Executive John Lee emphasized that election work will not cause any suspension of rescue and relief efforts for disaster victims. Completing the election on schedule is a strong support for maintaining social stability. Lee said, “Everyone, I have made a decision: the Legislative Council election originally set for December 7 will be held as scheduled.” In light of the Wang Fuk Court fire, the government has paused election publicity and promotion. Chief Executive John Lee said the election date has statutory force; completing it as scheduled reflects adherence to constitutional order and the spirit of the rule of law. It is also a strong support for social stability and post-disaster reconstruction. “Letting the new term of legislators take office as soon as possible will allow us to push forward post-disaster priorities more quickly and effectively—aftercare support, recovery and reconstruction, as well as the formulation, review, and reform of relevant laws. Much of this work must go through the Legislative Council for deliberation, funding approval, and lawmaking in order to be implemented. This is the most responsible attitude toward Hong Kong’s future.” He added that assisting disaster victims and preventing similar incidents from happening again require social reforms, and these reforms need legislators with constitutional status. Lee said, “The reform partners I need most are inevitably Legislative Council members. They have gone through this fire and feel our shared pain; they will surely work with the government to advance reforms together. Electing aspiring and capable legislators is an important step on the road to rebuilding. Support and follow-up work will not stop, and the pace of reform cannot pause. We must move forward to turn grief into strength.” He said he will begin working with the new Legislative Council immediately.
