The tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po has claimed the lives of at least eight foreign domestic workers. Hundreds of compatriots gathered in Central to pay tribute to the victims. Central was filled with sorrow this Sunday. Led by a priest, crowds of foreign domestic workers on Chater Road, sang and prayed in sympathy with the vicitms and survivors of the devastating fire in Tai Po. Some choke in tears, some lay down chrysanthemums. Filipino domestic helper Michelle said, "We also have coworkers died in the incident. We offer some prayers for them and hopefully there is no any workers or locals (becoming) victims." As of yesterday, it is confirmed that one Filipino and seven Indonesian domestic workers lost their lives in the fire, with 57 unaccounted for. A lawyer said that many affected workers may require more time to recover and look for new employers. Patricia Ho, Principal Lecturer of Faculty of Law, HKU said, "While they are dealing with this, they are also facing the uncertainty of whether the employment will continue, and I have no doubt that this uncertainty will be on both sides. From the employers, whether they're able to continue to afford this." In reponse, the Labour Department said workers can apply for a change of employer in Hong Kong, without having to return to their home countries, under special circumstances, such as the death or financial hardship of the employer. Meanwhile, at Kwong Fuk Estate in Tai Po, fellow workers continue to pour in supplies. The Mission for Migrant Workers said they have yet to decided whether to set up booths here in the future, but if any foreign domestic helper needs assistance, they are happy to send supplies to their current locations.
