Hong Kong Jockey Club announces HK$170 million relief and major race-day changes

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has announced HK$100 million in emergency assistance through its Jockey Club Emergency Relief Fund to provide urgent support for the injured and the families of those who died in the Wang Fuk Court fire.

The fund will provide HK$150,000 in emergency aid to the family of each deceased victim. Survivors with serious injuries will receive HK$100,000, while those in stable condition will receive HK$50,000. Distribution will be handled through the Social Welfare Department and local NGOs. The Club says it will offer additional assistance in the future.

The Club has also announced that Sunday's race meeting will be held behind closed doors, while Saturday's Mark Six draw is postponed to next Tuesday.

All tickets already purchased will remain valid.

Sunday's race meeting will operate on a significantly reduced scale, limited to owners, directors, selected members and their guests. There will be no corporate sponsors. Jockey Club directors, officials, trainers and jockeys will observe a one-minute silence, and jockeys will wear black armbands. No live music performances will be arranged. Off-course betting branches will provide only essential customer services. All reservations made at the racecourse and OTBs will be refunded.

The Club adds that it will donate the full net revenue from Sunday's race meeting -- estimated at around HK$70 million -- to support victims. Together with the initial HK$100 million contribution, the total donation is expected to reach HK$170 million.
