At least 13 dead in Tai Po fire

A five-alarm fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, resulting in at least 13 deaths and 15 injuries. 

The blaze started at around 3p.m.

Multiple blocks of Wang Fuk Court could be seen on fire. 

The buildings were covered in scaffolding for maintenance and the flames spread rapidly. Many units on the lower floors caught fire. 

The fire caused serious casualties, including a firefighter who died in the line of duty. 

It is understood that people are still trapped. 

The Home Affairs Department has opened two community halls as temporary shelters and arranged coaches to transport affected residents. 

Chief Executive John Lee chaired an interdepartmental emergency meeting. He said he was deeply grieved by the multiple casualties and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.
