The Yau Ma Tei section of the Central Kowloon Bypass will be open to traffic on December 21.

The government expects the 42 billion-dollar project will trim peak-hour travel time between Yau Ma Tei and Kowloon Bay from 30 minutes to just 5 minutes.

After eight years of construction, the Central Kowloon Bypass will soon see "light at the end of the tunnel," as it is now at the final stage of works, with the last tests being conducted.

JOHN LEE, Chief Executive: "On December 21st the Yau Ma Tei section of a new Central Kowloon Bypass will open. It is a dual three-lane 4.7 kilometre carriageway."

The western portal of the bypass runs between Yau Ma Tei and Kai Tak, with a 3.9-kilometre tunnel in between.

According to a driving simulator video by the Highways Department, drivers starting from Olympic MTR station, can keep left on the West Kowloon Highway then enter the Central Kowloon Bypass, while not changing lane.

By the time you get to the tunnel exit, choose a lane for your destination. Drivers heading to Kai Tak and Kowloon Bay can stay left.

Those taking the other lanes can head towards Kwun Tong and the cruise terminal.

The authorities estimated the commute time from Yau Ma Tei and Kowloon Bay could be reduced from 30 minutes to just five minutes during peak hours, relieving the burden of the existing transport system. The new highway will charge eight dollars per trip for all vehicles.

Meanwhile, the eastern portal which links Kai Tak Interchange and Tseung Kwan O- Lam Tin Tunnel, is expected to be completed next year.
