Broken down ferris wheel riders rescued after 9 hours

A ferris wheel in Osaka, Japan, came to an emergency stop on Tuesday, leaving riders trapped in their gondolas for 9 hours before all were rescued. 

Passengers were inside 9 gondolas at EXPOCITY when the ride stopped at 5.40p.m. 

Facility members manually lowered the gondolas one by one to rescue the riders. 

Firefighters arrived at the scene over three hours after the ride stopped to rescue the remaining 12 people using a ladder truck. 

The last person was brought to safety at around 2.40a.m. 

The operator said the wheel probably stopped due to a system malfunction triggered by a lightning strike.
