Many football fans in Hong Kong were disappointed when the Hong Kong team lost narrowly to Singapore and failed to qualify for the Asia Cup Finals.

Assessing the state of future football development in Hong Kong, former Hong Kong captain and manager Kwok Ka-ming said in TVB's Straight Talk programme that the city is not developing youth players of exceptional skills.

KWOK KA-MING, Former captain & manager, Hong Kong football team: "I think the level is not strong enough. The coaches need to be developed more and then better. And then now, you see the game now, everybody plays more or less the same, passing, passing, passing, passing, passing. Instead of creating some of the, what I mentioned about, Yiu Cheuk-yin, Cheung Chi-doy (legendary HK footballers) individual good players. We have to aim for some of the top players. Now, I mean like Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, and then now the young player from Barcelona, Yamal, right? We need to have some individual players in the team to create what we have done in the past and then the individual first can bring the team good results."

Kwok said one positive development is that some Hong Kong players are now playing in the mainland professionally, where levels are much higher than Hong Kong.
