The Trump administration has ramped up the pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by designating the Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organisation, and Maduro as its head. The designation is the latest measure in Washington's escalating campaign to combat drug trafficking into the US. This as multiple airlines have cancelled flights to and from the country. La Guaira, Venezuela's main airport deserted. Two Venezuelan airlines announced Monday the cancellation of their flights to and from the country, joining seven other international airlines that have already suspended operations following a warning from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about alleged risks of flying in Venezuelan airspace. FAA warned pilots Friday to exercise caution when flying over Venezuela due to the deteriorating security situation and increased military activity around the country. Speaking on his weekly TV programme President Nicolas Maduro addressed the US comments as psychological war. Maduro said: "No psychological war will stop Venezuela: we have defeated them in the psychological war and in the economic war, and Venezuela is moving forward." On the same programme, Executive Vice President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez addressed comments by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying, "Today Marco Rubio pulled out another rehash about the Cartel de los Soles, that now it's a terrorist organisation. Ridiculous, they're ridiculous. They repeat and repeat the story about drug trafficking." Tensions between the two countries have been high since September as US military forces carried out a series of attacks against vessels suspected of drug trafficking in international waters of the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean. At least 80 people have died.
